Online Course: Understanding Racism

The 8-week course offers an introduction to racism and whiteness using online self-study, individual reflections, facilitated online space as well as peer review sessions. Participants are supported to not only reflect on systems of oppression and racism more particularly but also to look at their own behaviours that support or disrupt such systems and develop a deeper understanding of how they can change their actions. Each module will span over two weeks with different group and individual activities. The aim of the sessions is to offer a personal understanding of how we are entangled in racism, to look at what structures of racism surround us and  by doing so, to create an understanding of how we operate within them. Finally, we will be taking a more personal look at  how structures of racism work on us and show up in our work contexts. The group will reflect on ways to change dynamics of power and privilege that are within their means.

The 4 core modules will cover:

  1. Whiteness & Racism:
    1. Where have we met them before?
    2. How have I engaged with them in the past?
  2. Framing Racism:
    1. How does it show up?
    2. What core elements can be identified?
  3. Privilege & Power:
    1. Why privilege and power matter?
    2. What is my involvement?
    3. How privilege and power work differently in different contexts?
  4. Power-sharing:
    1. Where do we want to go?
    2. How do we share power?
